Why do people start spending more time on golf when they move up in their status and become more influential?

It is very difficult to understand why people at the top in every field, whether in corporate houses, sports, theatre or politics are very fond of playing golf. I think it is more because the best part of golf, unlike most other sports is that it is not attached to any age and people of all ages can enjoy the game; they don't need to be athletically fit to play on the greens. With every passing day, golfing is becoming more and more popular and everybody wants to try out his or her hand movement on the golf greens.

Probably another reason why I think the game has gained popularity among upper class people is that it gives them all an easy platform to connect and network with top names in different fields. Sometimes big business deals are executed on the golf course during a lazy late Sunday afternoon, though one thing that I fail to understand is why are they all carrying a truckload of equipments with them on the golf course, as if they are going on a trekking mission.
